Buying A Seed Drill
Hand-sowing seeds outside of very small backyard garden plots is a task that’s been relegated to the distant past, thanks to the modern seed drill. Seed drills, or seeders, have become ubiquitous on farms around the country and for good reason—they sow your seeds in even rows and at a certain depth with a high degree of precision, which prevents waste, maximizes yield and keeps your plots tidy.
Not sure what to look for when shopping for a seeder? Bucklin Tractor & Implement (BTI), with six locations throughout Kansas, is here to help! Read the pointers we’ve provided below, then stop into one of our dealerships to let us help you find the perfect seed drill for your farming operation. We are proud to serve communities like Hoxie and Pratt, KS.
Consider Seed Type
Think about how many different crops you’d like to plant this season. If you’re only planting one type, then you won’t need to concern yourself with a seeder that can handle different seed sizes. But you’ll still want to consider whether the seeds will easily flow on their own; if their shape prohibits this, then a pelleted option may be better to improve accuracy and increase efficiency.
The width of your beds and the space between each seed is another factor worthy of your consideration, as these measurements will also change depending on the crop type. You can find seeders that are more adjustable to allow for changes in seed depth and row width.
Plot Size
How much land you’re planting is another concern when buying a seed drill. Home gardens can get by with a jab-type seeder that is easy to carry and lightweight. Greenhouses may be planted with a four- or six-row pinpoint seeder, which can be pushed easily, but they require some soil preparation as they aren’t designed to perform well on plots with a lot of debris. Four-row seeders aren’t adjustable, with a fixed 1” width, but six-row seeders can be adjusted.
Maintenance Concerns
If you are not very skilled with making adjustments or repairs to farming equipment, you may want to go with the simpler and more streamlined options available. You can also always contact the service department here at BTI if you need some professional assistance with your seed drill!
Make sure that you clean out the drill after use to avoid leaving seed to rot when moisture accrues, as this could corrode the box or attract pests. Use a shop vacuum to remove all seed debris. Inspect the seeder before you use it, too, to make sure it’s clean and free of pests or debris. Check the drive mechanism frequently as you use the seeder so you can stop before debris clogs up the machinery.
